Changing Hearts, Changing Minds is a publication from YPMH, developed through a two-year collaborative project with the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) and its knowledge transfer company, IfM Engage.
This joint project applied systems engineering and innovation analysis to ‘join up’ diverse areas of research into depression in young people. Using innovation methods from the IfM’s Centre for Technology Management – and delivered in a series of workshops by IfM Engage – the project generated and assessed practical ideas for early intervention in mental health.
A multidisciplinary understanding of how depression develops in young people, incorporating biological, psychological, and social factors. This includes identifying key systems, mechanisms and pathways that offer opportunities for earlier and more effective intervention.
Specific, evidence-informed opportunities for early intervention – including prevention, prediction, detection, diagnosis and treatment – with a focus on the critical stages of development.
Insights into how these opportunities could be used in real-world settings, from self-care by individuals and families to formal healthcare services and wider mental health support systems, including schools, youth charities, and community services.
High-level recommendations for taking these ideas forward – from co-creation to implementation – to help shape a mentally healthier future for young people.
